about

Our second split in a row sees AWP family Apothecary going back to back with the ridiculously inventive and spectacular Magick Incense. This is an album people have been hoping for a cassette release of for a while, us here at AWP included.

Magick Incense's half of the split consists of a single massive track. At its core, this five part suite is classic raw atmospheric black metal, pretty much my favorite thing in the world. But there's so much more at play here than just the piteous vocals, minor key arpeggios, and occasionally inaudible drums. The structures recall Striborg's epic Black Desolate Winter, though with a modern, multi-faceted take on lo-fi BM. The drumming though is much less primitive and, in some of the the track's more adventurous moments, recalls Sin-Nanna's improvisational work behind the skins live for Pentemple.. In fact, shades of Gnaw Their Tongues brutal free improvisation flecked nightmare Per Flagellum Sanguemque, Tenebras Veneramus also rear their ugly head. Both in terms of the drums and the songwriting in general.

And the guitars? Well they're... almost always louder than the tambourine.

Apothecary's side of the split starts with darkly shimmering synths that call to mind Tangerine Dream invoking blissful cosmic horrors. And then the single beefiest baseline we've ever put to tape drops, the drums come in full tilt, guitars a tremolo and right in your face and you realize that Apothecary has stepped his game up tremendously from 2018's A Mist Upon A Sacred Forest Floor, Beheld the Dark Flame on our own PSALM 88 sub-label. And he was already batting a thousand.

Mid-fi muscle aside, the 16 minute Monsoon Fever is as much a psychedelic journey of swirling leads and abrupt, but brilliant compositional about-faces (and throat-singing!!) as anything on Magick Incense's side of the tape.

And the other two tracks deliver just as much trippy goodness. The accurately named Cavernous Ruins looms as large as its name implies. An instrumental, largely solo guitar piece, it's reminiscent of Clair Cassis's more ambient work or even non-metal master solidbody torturers like Steven R. Smith or Roy Montgomery.

Lastly "Drawing Blanks" muscles up again and brings a whiplash black-death energy with a little bit of an early Krallice feel, promptly hammering us all into the ground with angular riffs and utterly relentless percussion. All said, an utterly incredible way to end an incredibly weird and perfect album.
